Diagram of non-line-of-sight imaging, with light bouncing off a relay wall to reach a hidden object
Universidad de Zaragoza · NLOS imaging

Seeing around corners

Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging recovers objects that are hidden from direct view by measuring how ultrafast light pulses scatter off a visible relay wall and return over time. This line of work includes NLOS imaging through scattering media with phasor fields, a cohesive framework for NLOS imaging based on Dirac notation, and time-gated polarization for active NLOS imaging.

Hands holding a stack of paper pages, each marked with a letter
MIT Media Lab · Nature Communications 2016

Reading a closed book

Terahertz pulses travel through paper and reflect weakly at each page boundary. By separating those reflections in time and analysing their spectral content, the letters printed on successive pages of a closed stack can be extracted without opening it, with applications to the inspection of fragile historical documents.

Goya's painting The Sacrifice to Vesta shown next to its X-ray and terahertz images
University of Barcelona · Optics Express 2013

Terahertz look at Goya

Terahertz imaging of Goya's "The Sacrifice to Vesta" (1771) reveals features beneath the paint layers that complement X-ray radiography, including the painter's signature. This work is part of a broader research line on terahertz inspection for cultural heritage.

Terahertz scanner prototype projecting a red scan line onto a test target
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

High-speed terahertz scanner

A fast terahertz imaging system that combines an ellipsoidal mirror with resonant and regular galvanometers to sweep the beam over large areas, reaching up to 250 frames per second. It was designed, modelled and validated through two prototype generations, with linear and circular scanning modes.

Sample of Space Shuttle external-tank insulation foam
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Space Shuttle foam inspection

Terahertz waves penetrate low-density foam, making it possible to find voids and defects inside spray-on insulation without damaging it. This project developed a portable terahertz system for the non-destructive inspection of Space Shuttle insulation.

das-Nano Onyx terahertz system for 2D materials characterization
das-Nano

Terahertz systems for industry

As Director of Terahertz Technology at das-Nano, led the development of commercial terahertz systems: Onyx for 2D materials characterization, Notus for multi-layer thickness and adherence of composite structures, and Irys for non-contact multi-layer thickness measurement in the automotive industry.
